In 1881 the USS Jeanette was trapped in pack ice and abandoned off the coast of Siberia north of the Bering Sea.. In 1884 her wreck was sighted trapped in  ice flows off the coast of Greenland, Her lonely three year journey carried her across the apex of the world locked in the torpid motion of Arctic sea-ice 26 years before man would reach the pole.

materials: vestigial piece of Los Angeles, wood, flock, static grass, paint

While walking along the streets of Los Angeles I saw a chunk of broken curb from a no parking zone. The diligent road crews had obviously noticed this issue and taken action by painting the broken remainder of the curb red, and abandoning the chunk to its fate a couple feet away. I fit the piece back into place from which it had fallen satisfied by my small act of putting things right, and promptly forgot about it for well over a year. Until I needed something heavy.
